Enchanted Leura in Sydney's Blue Mountains

Having read "Lord of the Rings" as a child, my imagination was primed to see elves, fairies and hobbits in Sydney's Blue Mountains.

Enchanted Leura in Sydney's Blue Mountains - an original Australian Landscape by Peter Inglis.

Those epic fantasy novels were written by the professor of language J. R. R. Tolkein C.B.E.. It all began with a blank page!

Yes, I know all books begin with blank page, but in this case the blank page was in one of his student's english papers. On reaching this naked page, Tolkein was tempted for a moment to give the student extra marks for momentarily sparing him the toil of marking. As his pen hovered over the page, a line flashed into his mind and he wrote:

" In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

Put your artistic licence to use and flex your mighty imagination in this painting.

What artistic licence? The one you are issued with when you study at Inglis Academy. The licence which gives you permission to move mountains and change the course of mighty rivers with your bare paint brush!

The original scene has charm of it's own, but we can add more poetry and fantasy in our painted version!

The Everglades Historic House & Gardens in Leura is a 12 acre property administered by the National Trust. The original owner commissioned a Danish architect Paul Sorensen in the 1930's, to design an art deco house and a series of terraced gardens.
