Perspective in a Pumpkin

Remember Cezanne's three basic shapes?

  1. Square
  2. Triangle
  3. Circle

When we add a 3rd dimension (depth) to these shapes we get:

  1. Cube
  2. Cone
  3. Sphere

This video shows us how to realistically place eyes and a mouth on a pumpkin, and rotate it in any direction.

A fantastic video from the master of perspective - Marshall Vandruff. This is the guy I talk about in most classes who teaches perspective with chalk and a blackboard.

Free colour fact sheets

Here's a great new feature of my art coaching sessions in 2018: every person who turns up with their artists visual diary gets a free (colour) handout like this:

The Inglis Colour Palette - organised after the Chevreaux colour wheel - Image © 2017 Peter Inglis

... with a short explanation.

Each handout explains one of our important painting concepts. Not too much information, just enough to reflect on while you are enjoying your new painting and looking at the great colours you mixed and recorded in your diary.

Sketching Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' version 1

This is one of my sketches from a Van Gogh Sunflowers session.

Van Gogh's Sunflowers No.1

"Sunflowers ?? !! ?? ", I hear you exclaim!

Here is the sketch and the original Van Gogh.

Aha! Hopefully you are saying "aha!" about now.

Can you see that it is an abstract version of the painting? All good painting and drawing is based on abstraction. Our brain interprets the world via abstractions.

So this is a compositional sketch. I am looking for:

  1. The big shapes
  2. The relationship between those shapes
  3. The rhythms

This process is explained in my book: How to Sketch Shapes.
