" He longed for an unsophisticated art which would not only appeal to connoiseurs but give joy and consolation to every human being." - E.H. Gombrich.
Another original by Van Gogh. There are many ways to do one painting, he showed us that!
Reference Materials used in the lesson
We use a variety of source materials in the class, augmented by my practical painting demonstrations.
Analysing focal points and composition using the rule of 3rds.
We use the ideas of Cezanne as described in my book "How to Sketch Shapes" to analyse the composition of the painting.
Perspective. What is it? How to we use it to paint?
Analysing the work as a traditional landscape. Which it is!
Van Gogh uses a contrapuntal arabesque as his central motif.
My simplified painting of the scene enables us to clearly see the brush strokes and textures. We also use printouts and a large computer display.
We refer to my ebook Van Gogh: The Starry Night, 1889 for step by step instructions.
What a gift Van Gogh left us! A series of stimulating paintings which seem like they could have been painted yesterday.
And... they can be pretty well entirely painted with just one brush. How cool is that?
The hand of Van Gogh.
Actually it's my hand, but all hands are pretty similar, for the purpose of painting. In this lesson we get the opportunity to practice the basic brush stroke.
With just one brush and one stroke, we can create many different textures.
I have analysed the colours in the painting and we use this as a guide to help us mix our colour palette.
We'll use the methods of Chevreaux and his Colour Wheel to mix them, as described in my books.
Student paintings
Yes, these are all painted by beginners in their very first lesson.
This truly is the world's most accelerated art system!
